The 2013 Chevrolet Spark

Chevrolet has done it again by releasing a new vehicle that is dubbed the smallest Chevrolet so far- the 2013 Chevrolet Spark. Smaller than the new 2012 Sonic, this vehicle can be compared to the Fiat 500 and the Scion iQ, and is really something. With GM really honing in on manufacturing smaller cars for these gas-trying times, the Spark should grace the lot at Harbor Chevrolet Buick GMC in Michigan City in the spring of 2012, just in time to beat the heat, hit the beach, and go on road trips all with the ease of mind that you’ll be riding comfortably and getting great gas mileage.

The Spark was inspired by the Chevrolet Beat concept car and will be considered a compact car with dimensions ringing in at 114.7” long, 62.9” wide, but with 86.3 interior feet of room allowing for up to four occupants. This will be a five-door hatchback style car that according to GM “..will provide versatility to the segment of extremely fuel-efficient small cars in the U.S.” This vehicle really gives the competition a run for its money with 11.4 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats as well.

Don’t let the size of this car scare you away, either. Chevrolet has already taken this into consideration and is including ten standard airbags, including front knee bags, front seat-mounted side airbags, and side-curtain bags. OnStar will come with all models for a limited time and electronic stability control will be included as well to give you peace of mind while driving.

First shown to the public at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, the Spark (formerly known as the Daewoo Matiz) has been bobbing and weaving through the streets of Europe for a year now. Chevrolet has really put a large emphasis on the release of this vehicle with the competition really heating things up.

GM has recently confirmed the powertrain specifications for the Spark for the first time, “..the 2013 Chevrolet Spark will be powered by a 85-horsepower, 1.2 liter 4-cylinder engine and either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic.” This little guy will also include electric power steering and a strut-front, torsion-beam-rear suspension, the brakes are discs in front, drums in back , and will run on low-rolling resistance tires. Its curb weight is about 2,300 pounds which is just 144” long, comparable to the Mitsubushi i or a base two-door Mini Cooper. And, keep in mind that there’s an electric version of the Spark on the way too.

This vehicle targets all audiences with its funky exterior coming in an array of different colors ranging from Jalapeno to Techno Pink to Lemonade, to its roomy interior with all the options any little heart could desire. The Spark also brings with it to the plate the affordability that we’re all looking for with the equipment that we all want. The base model 1LT includes must-have options such as air conditioning, power windows, and alloy wheels while the 2LT includes an enhanced exterior appearance with the front and rear sport fascias, a unique front upper and lower grille, roof rails, chrome liftgate handle, and a chrome exhaust outlet. More options for the 1LT and 2LT models include Bluetooth, OnStar, a 7” digital-touch screen Color Touch, and a three month trial of SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

Overall, the all new Chevrolet Spark is a much-anticipated and much-needed vehicle coming at a perfect time with the spiking gas prices and the economy in its recession. Chevrolet hasn’t released pricing yet, but it plans to sell the Spark at a price substantially lower than the Sonic’s $14,495 base price. This will allow affordability yet provide the comfort and convenience the people are looking for while not skimming on any of the options or appearances.
