The city of South Bend, Indiana lies along the St. Joseph River, near its southernmost bend, thus the name speaks for itself. It is one of the largest cities in the state of Indiana, and the population continues to grow. Primitive western settlements in the region were fur trading posts. Several settlers from the American Fur Company settled in this area. By 1829, the area was undergoing tremendous expansion and Alexis Coquillard and Lathrop Minor Taylor (Coquillard was an agent for the American Fur Company, and Taylor designed a post for another trading company by the name of Samuel Hanna and Company) were viewed as leaders, and soon a post office was set up. Lathrop Taylor became postmaster, and at that time the town was called Southold. The name of the town was then changed about a year later over to South Bend. Throughout the 1830’s and into the 1850’s dams and mills were constructed on both sides of the river, and in 1851, the first steam locomotive came roaring into the area. Public focus began to shift toward the tracks and away from the water, and by 1852, Henry Studebaker constructed a wagon shop, and he became a global figure, shining under a showcase spotlight as being the world’s biggest wagon builder. He later became a successful automobile manufacturer, and even though he did not run a Chevy dealer in South Bend, Indiana, Studebaker’s success remains an American legend, and his models are still on display in historic museums. Electric rail transportation came about quickly, and by the mid 1920’s a streetcar service was set up that serviced South Bend to the “Windy City” of Chicago. Much of South Bend’s success and employment came from the manufacturing sector. Unfortunately, hard economic times led to a decline in the manufacturing industry, and this made up less and less of South Bend’s workforce. However, South Bend is back on the move today.
