The Potawatomi and Miamifir tribes inhabited this region for many years, hunting and farming the land while using the heavily forested region. In the 1600’s, French fur traders came into contact with the tribes. Trade benefited both sides, but eventually the tribes were forced off the land and put into the Kansas Territory by 1838. The French and Indian War took its toll on the Potwatomi, and when Britain won the war, it took control over the Great Lakes region. However, the American Revolution gave control back to the United States, and even though some of the tribe members married both French and English settlers while continuing to reside in the area, most were forced out after the Black Hawk War of 1835. One of the first settlers was a man by the name of Joseph Bailly who arrived in the area back in 1822. A French fur trader by business, Bailly built a home and a fur trading post in order to do business with the local tribe members. The public can still see his homestead, and it is one of the historic homes on display at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. In 1834, the Thomas family settled in the community of Coffee Creek. By 1852, the Thomas family laid out plans for the downtown region consisting of 46 lots. It was turned into a village called Calumet, but by 1870 the name was changed over to Chesterton. The steel industry and water transportation played vital roles in job growth and economic development.
